A fun Christmas or Winter Holiday game for Science classes where students make SI / Metric unit estimates. Students give their best guesses on "how many lumens are produced by 200 strands of lights" or "how long would it take a reindeer to fly around the world if it could go Mach 6?" Great for groups. Game ideas included.
This holiday activity will help students realize how much they know (and don’t know) about SI units. The primary purpose of this activity is not for students to use equations and calculate answers to these questions (however, hints are provided to enable students to do that). Instead, students should be encouraged to use any prior knowledge they may have and make an educated guess for each holiday-related question. Working in pairs / groups will help students brainstorm a possible answer. Students will be excited when they have a close guess and will hopefully laugh at their guesses that are far off. At the end of this activity, students will be more familiar with several SI units and have reference points for estimating their values in the future.
