Looking for a fun Christmas or winter activity that incorporates science, technology, engineering, and/or math? Christmas-Winter STEM / STEAM Challenges are the perfect activities because they engage your students in brain-busting work disguised as fun!
The basic premise:
Working against a criteria/constraints list individually or in partners, students will design and build a way to safely “mail” two candy canes in one paper bag package without breakage. (Note: cookies can be substituted for candy canes.)
Note: This version is for use with Google Slides in 1:1/paperless classrooms. If you prefer to print and have students complete work with paper/pencil, you'll want to look at the printable version instead.

Sample/suggested materials for each student or group:

– Candy canes (2)
• Cookies can be substituted for candy canes
– Paper bag
– Pipe cleaners (5 – 10)
– Popsicle/craft sticks (5 – 10)
– Tape (12 in.)
– Scale (to measure weight criterion)
– Copies of data recording & analyzing handouts
• Tissue paper, coffee filters, or cotton balls
• String, cable ties

Each design iteration should be planned for ~60-90 min. if you are including data gathering and analysis rather than just building for fun. If you add extension activities, you will need to adjust timing accordingly.
