This pack can be used for the entire month of December. There are 20 different story covers that students can choose from.
You could have students work on one story over the course of three or four days. Or, you could have students write one each day over the course of the month. I typically spend many days with just one story. I encourage my students to preplan, write, edit, select a cover, and illustrate it. When it is done, we have a publishing event where students get in groups of four and read their stories to each other. This motivates students to do their best work because they know someone will be hearing their story! I also put their finished story up on the bulletin board in the hallway.
They can decide how many pages they want to write for their story. This allows for differentiation because it enables students to write at their own pace and level. There are two types of continuation papers included. One option enables students to draw a picture on each page. The second option enables more advanced writers to only draw a picture at the beginning of each chapter.
Before sending my students out to work, I first model a story. Then, I have them get with their writing partner to brainstorm ideas together before sending them out to their seats.
