Ugly Sweater Christmas Writing resource was created to provide students with short, engaging writing tasks before the holiday break. The holiday writing prompts are interconnected and follow a similar set-up so they’re engaging for students and simple for you.

Each day of holiday writing includes a short prompt centered on those ugly holiday sweaters we all love to hate, a graphic organizer for collecting ideas, and space for completing their written piece. Three prompts include pages for drawing visuals to go along with students’ writing. When all of the activities have been completed, students will have practiced narrative writing, opinion writing, and an informative piece.

About this resource, other teachers have said:

“My kids are loving this unit. Thank you!! I started by having them design their very own ugly sweater and used that as a unit introduction! They are actually excited to write!”

“A great activity that my 4th graders enjoy. I also appreciate that some of the sweaters are winter themed, and not Christmas themed, so all of my kids can participate together, whether they celebrate Christmas or not.”

“What a fun way to get some writing in at the start of the New Year! Never to late to write about Ugly Sweaters!”

“This is soo much fun. Great way to keep students writing that week before winter break.”

Writing prompts include:

- WANTED: Pants

- Picking the Perfect Partner

- The Great Sweater Caper

- The Ugliest Sweater Ever

- The Ugly Sweater Award

Daily short plans are included as suggestions for using them with your whole group. The activities could easily be used with individual students, partners, or in small groups. This Christmas Sweater Mini Writing Unit also would be perfect to have on hand as an emergency sub resource this winter. Simply copy enough for your class and leave these directions for the substitute! The pages were designed with few graphics to help save ink.
