This will be an activity you repeat year after year!
What's Included:
- Checklist of 17 countries to choose from or add your own to the list!
- Each student chooses one country, or this project can be done in partners/small groups
- Student Directions/Rubric (2 different versions, one with required diorama and one with diorama as an extension activity)
- Headings for student poster board to help with organization and clarity
- Quick tips for making a diorama
- Venn Diagram to compare/contrast traditions (students cut it out and paste it to their poster board)
- Writing page: "Would you like to celebrate this holiday? Why or why not?" (students cut it out and paste it to their poster board)
Also includes option for "Holidays Around the World" vs "Christmas Around the World"
Ever wonder what Christmas is like in other countries? Give your students the chance to explore the world and learn about the many different ways this holiday is celebrated. This project has two parts: a presentation (poster, PowerPoint, etc.) and a diorama! Don’t you just LOVE dioramas! *Option included for diorama to be an extension activity, not a requirement.
The final product also makes for a great winter celebration that parents would love to see. Having a winter party before break? Invite parents in to share in their child’s excitement and learn about the different Christmas customs and traditions around the world.
Of course we all know that all students do not celebrate Christmas, and that we all come from very diverse backgrounds. The compare/contrast portion of the project is a great way for students to share their own tradition, be it big or small. I’ve also invited students to share their opinion of whether or not they’d like to be part of the holiday that they’re researching. These connections deepen their understanding of the research and incorporate critical thinking and writing skills… all during what is SURE to be an exciting 2-3 weeks before winter break!
