Hello! I am Christopher Columbus. When I was a young boy, I loved to hear stories about the explorer Marco Polo. Marco Polo had explored the Indies . He had told of his travels, the people he met and the riches he found. I wanted to travel to the Indies just like Marco Polo but I wanted to find a different and shorter route.
I lived in Italy as a boy but moved to Portugal
as an adult. Portugal was along the coast and
I loved the ocean.
In the year 1492, I decided to travel out West in
hopes of reaching the Indies. I knew the world
was round even if no one else did.
I also wanted to explore new lands for gold and
But I needed money so I made plans to ask for
help to fund my expedition.
I decided to go to Spain to ask King Ferdinand
and Queen Isabella for help. They decided to
fund my expedition. So now I was ready
to set sail. Hooray!
There were several sailors who agreed to go with me. We loaded three ships known as the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. And off we went!
We sailed for many days and many nights. Many men were sick and wanted to go back
home. But I convinced them to keep going.
On October 12th, we finally saw land. We were so excited.
We met many natives that looked quite different.
I called them Indians because I thought we had
landed in the Indies. I was wrong. We had actually
landed on an island called the Bahamas.
The Natives were very nice. They gave us food
I returned to Spain and told everyone
of my adventures. I made several other trips out
West but I never did land in the United States.
I am known for finding the route from the old
world to the new world and that is why we
celebrate Columbus Day today.
