Help your students practice close reading skills while learning about Christopher Columbus and some other well-known explorers. My students are excited to learn about new people and happily practice their reading comprehension skills while doing so. This unit is designed to supplement regular classroom curriculum. It is focused on the CCSS standard RI 2.1, 2.5, 2.9, W2.1. Hopefully, even if you are not teaching Common Core, this unit will still be helpful to use to help students identify key facts, review text features, compare and contrast and write an opinion. I
As the students learn about famous people, they practice their critical thinking skills. This unit provides informational text about Christopher Columbus and other explorers. The activity pages and questions lead to lively discussions and help students clarify in their own minds how the explorers were the same or different. They look at how text features can be used to find the answers to questions or important information. There is a quick opinion write about whether we should or should not celebrate Columbus Day. Although designed around 2nd grade standards, this unit would also be a good for 3rd grade review.
