Traditionally, the second Monday in October, classrooms have recognized Columbus Day. Recently, many cities and states have renamed Columbus Day, Indigenous People’s Day. By renaming the day, it encourages classrooms to examine the events from this time in history from a different point of view.
Our product has been designed for primary students and is based on the picture book, Encounter by Jane Yolen. This story is told from a young Taino boy's point of view. It recounts when Christopher Columbus landed on the island of San Salvador in 1492 and discovered the Taino Indians. Years later the boy, now an old man, looks back at the destruction of his people and their culture by the colonizers.
