This is a really fun activity! Students will be surprised with the gender of their babies!
Kids are given a set of chromosomes, but don't know if they have a boy or a girl. Half the kids will get boys and half the kids will get girls, but it will be a surprise! They cut out the chromosomes, match up the homologous pairs, and paste them in order on a line image of a baby. By looking at the sex chromosomes, they determine the gender of the baby they received. They then answer 10 analysis questions about their findings, chromosomes, chromosome numbers in humans, etc.
This activity runs very smoothly because the step-by-step instructions are CLEAR and easy to follow, and unlike some more advanced activities, the chromosome images are easy to tell apart.
You will need to print:
Instructions and Analysis Questions (1 page front/back)
Baby Image - 1 page (or students could simply paste chromosomes in notebook)
Karyotypes - (the boy/girl karyotypes fit on 1 page, you print 1/2 the copies, cut in half)
