This is a complete lesson plan in the preferred "5-E" format. The lesson as presented takes approximately 80 minutes to complete in an introductory-level high school biology class, but can easily be modified to fill one shorter period or spread over two 45 minute periods. Includes opportunities for guided discussion, cooperative learning, and individual reflection. Students are eager to use their knowledge to 'diagnose' genetic disorders based on karyotypes. This lesson includes the 5-E plan, a two page graphic organizer, Cornell-style notes, and a thorough but fun assessment activity. I recommend creating a slide show of karyotypes to use during the "diagnosis", as described in the lesson. This received rave reviews from my students and administration.
