The Chrysanthemum Letter Writing Center is a great way for students to practice writing a friendly letter. After reading Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, discuss with students how they would feel if the class made fun of their name. You may also wish to review the parts of a friendly letter. Then, introduce the Chrysanthemum Letter Center Directions. Students who finish writing their friendly letter to Chrysanthemum early may decorate an envelope for their letter. To create an envelope from the sheet I’ve provided, simply fold on the dotted line and tape the edges. You may do this ahead of time for students or show them how to make the envelope. Another option would be to provide real envelopes for students to decorate. My second graders absolutely LOVED this center! I told students I would mail the letters, then I took them home and read them. I wrote a letter to the class from Chrysanthemum thanking them for their thoughtful and kind notes. They were so excited! I know your students will love this center, too!
