I begin every school year by reading, Chrysanthemum to my students. Great for integrating character education into your lessons. Chrysanthemum teaches a great lesson on kindness and not saying hurtful things. It is a great way to start the year as in this activity, students pledge to be kind to one another and only use kind words to their friends this school year. In the lesson, students complete the craftivity as the teacher reads Chrysanthemum. At the end of the lesson, students have a short writing activity that follows along with the book. I have also included another writing activity that helps students realize just how "absolutely, positively perfect" they truly are. I have used this lesson for many years with first and third graders, and it is always a hit!
