Run this template on pink or red paper for effect, or have students color before cutting out. While the teacher reads the book Chrysanthemum each student carefully holds their heart. Each time in the story that characters show behavior that hurts Chrysanthemum's feelings students wrinkle their heart a little bit. By the end of the story their hearts are crumpled in a ball. Then have students lay them out flat to see you can't get all of the wrinkles out. Discuss what the saying on the heart means. This can also be extended into a writing activity by having students write a sentence about something nice to say to Chrysanthemum instead and glue the heart above their sentence.
