Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes is a story about a little mouse with a BIG name. I love to start the school year with this book because it provides a great opportunity to explore names and to focus on what makes each of us unique. It is also a very good avenue for talking about teasing and ways that we work to get along with one another. This unit includes seven ready-to-go activities to use with the book: A book preview, vocabulary practice, a story map, a sequencing activity, comprehension questions,a data collection and graphing activity, and also a homework activity that students complete by asking parents about their own names. Also included is a list of ten extension activities for use with Chrysanthemum.
