Product Description
During the first week of school, it's essential that you get to know your students and build classroom community. Use this packet of activities, based on the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, to do just that!

Making Words: Students use letters from a big word (in this case Chrysanthemum) to make smaller words they are more familiar with (ex. “sat”, “math”, “the”, “sent”.) Students can only use a letter as many times as it is present in the main given word. Follow-up activities are provided to use your name (ex. Mrs. Smith) and their own names (first, first and last, first, middle and last…it’s up to you!) by writing the letters on the petals of the flower.

Name Graph: Have students write their names on note cards and count the letters. Work as a whole group to complete the tally chart showing how many students have 3 letters in their name, 4 letters in their name, etc. Then, let students complete the coordinating graph independently.

Ice Breaker: Get students up and moving! Explain that students are going to rotate around the room and introduce themselves to each other. (Be as structured or unstructured with organizing the “rotation” as you’d like.) When they meet, they will sign a box on the graph that applies to them and answer the associated follow-up questions. Students can only sign ONE box on each sheet (unless you have very few students). However, a student who went to the beach and read a great book can choose to sign one box on one classmate’s sheet and a different box on a different sheet. Consider reading all the boxes before beginning and walking through the first rotation or two together! Best copies on 11x17 paper so little hands have room to write!
