I have used this fun activity for the past 8 years to give students lots of practice quickly recognizing and decoding words with chunks/rimes/phonograms/word parts. I have found that students of all ages enjoy "finding the match." Plus, as students write the chunks, and words that incorporate the chunks, they start to internalize the sound and letter patterns in written English. As a result, they become faster readers and more accurate spellers.
Match-O is the core activity (the "workhorse") of my complete decoding program, The Chunk Decoding and Spelling Program. The complete program includes 5 word lists (with 30 words each) that go with each of the 4 Chunk Charts. Each list gets increasingly difficult, so that by level 3, students are already working with multisyllabic words.
The activity has 4 steps:
1. Light it! (highlight the chunk on a word from the Leveled Word List)
2. Write it! (write the leveled list word under the matching Chunk the Match-O grid, taking care to line up the letters that match)
3. Read it! (read the chunk, helping word, and new word you just wrote in the grid)
4. Check it! (put a check mark next to the word you just finished in the Leveled Word List)
