If your struggling readers are anything like mine, they need help with decoding fluency; decoding words quickly by breaking them into chunks rather than trying to read sound by sound. These chunking templates were created to help my students see the chunks in words and become more fluent decoders.
Since groups of students and skill levels change from year to year, I have provided two types of templates:
♦ Large templates (one per page)
♦ Small templates (four per page)
This helps you chose which works best for you and your students. The larger templates work great for whole-group or small-group practice and the smaller templates work great for individual students or independent practice during a literacy center.
These Short Vowel
templates are grouped by the most common short and long vowel word families and are broken down into small chunks of sounds for struggling readers; those who have a hard time noticing the chunks on their own. The goal is that with repeated guided practice, students will start noticing and chunking words on their own, becoming fluent with this strategy. Once they become fluent, they can start grouping larger chunks of sounds in multisyllabic words.

Also included are various chunking formats for the templates so you can choose which works best for the different students in your class:
♥ The word broken into chunks with the whole word on the same page
♥ Words broken into chunks and your students say the whole word
♥ Words only and students have to break it into chunks themselves
How to Use Them
♦ Project the templates up on the Interactive Whiteboard to use whole-group
♦ Print and laminate them to write on with a dry erase marker and reuse over and over in small-group
♦ Make several sets and use them for a literacy center.
I like to laminate these so that my students and I can write on them. After we have practiced them several times, I cover up the already chunked word and let my students practice marking where they would chunk the word when reading it on their own so they can self-monitor their own progress.
