Chunky Monkey is one of the easiest decoding strategies to teach students. It is the ability to break apart words into chunks of sound to make the words easier to read. Students really enjoy using this strategy.
You can use these flip flaps to help teach this skill to students. Each flip flap includes a long i or long u word family. This includes 107 long i words and 27 long u words. The flip flaps are also available in smaller versions for interactive notebooks.
You can use these Chunky Monkey Flip Flaps as part of an
interactive notebook, center, or part of your guided reading group. Glue them to a poster board or tri-fold board for an interactive center. Glue them into student notebooks for independent practice.
