"Chunky Monkey" is a decoding strategy that can be taught to help students when they approach a word they don't know. Chunky Monkey teaches them to look for small "chunks" they know in a bigger word. (Chunky Monkey is a part of the beanie baby reading animal strategies concept.)
This packet includes
-2 Chunky Monkey strategy posters (BW and color)
- 3 Chunky Monkey practice pages with detachable bookmarks
Students look at the picture and the word. They circle small
"chunks" they know in a bigger word. Then they try to read the
word using the strategy. I use these practice pages both to model
the strategy and to assess their progress.
- 6 page emergent reader "My Favorite Season"
Students read the book and when they come to the underlined
words, they circle the small "chunk" in the word and try to read the
word using the strategy.
