Cinco de Mayo Music Activity! Letter/Music Note Fill-Ins (Treble & Bass Clef)
This CINCO DE MAYO MUSIC ACTIVITY is a fun way for students to learn the note names on the music staff by drawing in the missing letters of the musical alphabet (A-G) for 24 Cinco de Mayo-related words. For example, the letters E, B and A are missing in the word “PUEBLA” (PU_ _ L _) and students must draw in the corresponding music note name of the missing letters, directly onto the music staff using a combination of whole notes, half notes, or quarter notes. There is a packet using treble clef and a packet using bass clef (using all of the same Cinco de Mayo words, thus the answer key and the word list are the same for both packets).
**This activity is aligned with the current NATIONAL CORE ARTS STANDARDS
and meet approximately six (6) standards (exact standards are listed on page 8 of the resource).

Pass out the four-page packets to students after they are familiar with the notes on the music staff. You may choose to hand out packets for the treble clef, bass clef, or both! I find it fun to make up a story about a rogue mariachi band stealing all of the musical alphabet letters (A-G) of each word, and it’s up to them (the students) to fill in the missing letters by drawing in the corresponding music note on the music staff. You can use “Cinco de Mayo” on page 1 of the activity as an example for how to fill in/complete each word.
*Just to clarify, there is no method behind the colors I have used for the whole, half, and quarter notes. Students can use whatever color they like but they should try to use all of the notes equally, not favoring the whole note for example. You may prefer to have them first use pencil, and then colored pens, pencils, or markers after they know their answers are correct. This could also be a good opportunity to teach them the rule of stem direction (notes on and above the third line have downward facing stems, and notes below the third line have stems facing up).
Direct the students to the fourth page of each packet (pages 12 and 17 in the overall resource) if they need help figuring out a word, or to make sure they are spelling each word correctly. If you are using this as a homework assignment, you may find it helpful to do several examples together, or have individuals write their answers on the board.
