This is one of my favorite craftivities that I use with my students! First, we read a penguin story such as Cinderella Penguin by Janet Perlman. I then teach them how to use the summary graphic organizer (Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then). Students then write their summary of the story on the summary card. After students write their summary, they use the penguin pattern to create their penguin. I also had my students become "fashion designers" by using construction paper to dress up their penguin like Cinderella or the Prince from the story. (They made their own patterns for the clothes, hair, and crown so these are not included in this set.) We then glued the summary onto the tummy so it looked like the penguin was holding the summary.
I have also used the penguin pattern by itself for their penguin reports. Each student wrote a research report on a different type of penguin. They then used the penguin pattern to create a replica of the penguin they researched and glued their report to the tummy so it looked like the penguin was holding the report.
