This project incorporates alternative energy, formation of fossil fuels, and circuits. (All fifth grade science TEKS)
Here is what I did:
Students created mini-projects working with a partner. The mini-projects were to build background knowledge. The could complete the assignments in any order and I was available as a 'consultant'. I even offered small mini-courses while students worked independently. The atmosphere was much like a 'workshop'.
When they completed the mini-projects, they were able to begin their circuit advertisements. Students brought in cereal boxes, The advertisements were designed on the outside of the cereal box and the circuit was hidden inside the box.

My students LOVED working independently and thoroughly enjoyed building circuits. I supplied each student/partnership with a manila folder to manage their products. I am including a rubric.
