I wrote this circuit for a colleague who wanted a set of order of operations exercises for the end of the year fifth graders / beginning of the year sixth graders. There are no negatives, but there are a few decimals and fractions. The operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Many of the exercises involve grouping symbols (parentheses) and some involve exponents. 24 problems in all, including four word problems.
The format is self-checking because the students must search for their answer to advance in the circuit. Students of all ages love this format! There is no answer key included because the answers are embedded in the circuit. The only thing the teacher needs to do is work the circuit ahead of his or her students to decide how to best use it in the classroom. Cooperative work? Stations? Homework? A scavenger hunt?
