Want to know what your primary students are hearing in the music you share, and open their ears to even more? Listening glyphs allow K-3 students to express what they hear by choosing one crayon or the other.
What's a Listening Glyph?
Glyphs are pictures of facts. A listening glyph asks students to identify the "facts" about a musical selection, and then express what they are hearing by choosing one crayon or another.
Example: Students are asked to decide if the music is "soft and loud" or only "soft". If they hear soft and loud passages they color the balloons pink and blue. If they only soft music they color the balloons orange and purple.
1) General Listening Glyph - The first listening glyph is for general use with any piece of music. Students will listen for steady beat, musical style, amplitude (volume), if there is an increase, decrease, or no change in tempo, if the music is bright or dark (timbre), and if they hear a full orchestra or only brass instruments.
2) Listening Glyph for "Entry of the Gladiators" by Julus Fucik - Students will listen for steady beat, musical style, amplitude (volume), if there is an increase or decrease in tempo, if the music is heroic or cowardly, and if they hear a full orchestra or only brass instruments.
3) Blank Listening Glyph - The final version of the glyph gives the greatest freedom. Blanks are provided so you can chose the things that you'd like your students to listen for.
4) About This Activity - The final page includes instructions and extension ideas.
Entry of the Gladiators was featured in the soundtrack for Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012) Movie.
