To become familiar with the importance, organization, forms, and administration of city government.
1 class period
Students begin this lesson by reading several paragraphs arranged into the following sections about city government. As they do so, have them underline or highlight the key words, names, terms, and ideas.
• Importance of City Government
• Branches of City Government
• Forms of City Government
• Administering City Government
• City Finances
• Influencing City Government
Afterwards, it is time to play JEOPARDY! The class is divided into two teams to compete against each other. A large drawing of the gameboard can be put on the the board. Or, if you have a whiteboard, you can use it to display the JEOPARDY gameboard provided on page 84C. Categories are TERMS, NUMBERS, MONEY MATTERS, PEOPLE, and ODDS AND ENDS. Questions asked during the game are based on facts given on the preceding pages. Complete game rules are provided on the lesson pages.
I use several JEOPARDY games during the school year to help students learn. Each time my students have walked into class and seen JEOPARDY categories on the board, they get excited. The competition in these games makes social studies class a lot of fun!
Teacher Instructions are included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment or used later on as a review exercise.
