This unit has a very simple structure to follow along with. The book has been broken up into 7 sections, with each section containing 3 chapters of the book. Each set of 3 chapters contains the same 5 different learning activities. The learning activities are: Vocabulary Builder: different vocabulary methods are used the sections and focus on thinking about more than just the definition of the word. Comprehension Questions: Highlight the main parts of the section Literary Element: definition of and questions about setting, conflict, point of view, etc. Journal/Discussion Questions: These do not necessarily have correct answers, but get students thinking about deeper ideas. Class Activity: These provide interdisciplinary connections and provide ways for students to show creativity. Besides the 5 different learning activities, 3 ideas for ongoing projects throughout the book are also included. The first is Character Sketch. Students follow a character closely throughout the entire book. The second is Themes. Students follow 3 different themes throughout the book. The third is Chapter Roles. 4 chapter roles are available after each section: Summarizer, Illustrator, Connector, and Questioner. Ideas for pre and post reading activities are also included.
