This activity has been designed to enhance student understanding for sequencing biographical events as per the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). It can be used as both a direct instruction activity or as skill practice at a literacy station or reading center.
I have found this to be successful when used as follow-up at a listening station or at a station with various sources available on a specific topic. The document contains cards for all events significant to the historic event. These can be cut and used by each student or printed on cardstock, laminated, and used cooperatively by a small group prior to the student completing the timeline independently.
To add rigor, I have coupled this activity with another similar timeline activity and had students look for common themes, corresponding events, relationships, or other connections between the two topics.
