When asking our students to consider why the Civil Rights Movement was necessary we break it down into the ways African Americans were denied life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as well as the legal documentation that gave them the rights they were being denied.
This download includes excerpts from 5 specifically chosen documents to examine the causes of the Civil Rights Movement and the basis for their quest for equality. To make each document more student friendly, a series of questions accompany each document in a scaffolding fashion that should “unwrap” the document and make the links between the document and the Civil Rights Movement clearer.
Also attached is a sample discussion scoring guide if you would like to turn this into a class discussion or number off for a quick set up of small group discussions.
The culminating discussion question (on the last page) makes for a great “exit” question or an extension of the class discussion.
I have left this as a Word document so that you can amend the questions or add additional questions/activities as needed.
