When Martin Luther King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, J. Edgar Hoover's FBI launched at all-out assault to de-legitimize him and to stop him from receiving the award. This should be a part of every study of the Civil Rights Movement. It was not just racist white Southerners who tried to impede the Civil Rights Movement - it was also the full might and power of the federal government. Students read the disturbing letter the FBI anonymously sent King, analyze its specific intent, and answer discussion questions. This activity blows students minds and really hammers home the challenges King and Civil Rights Movement faced.
