The students will work in teams to complete a performance task that states, "One of the national publishing companies, History is Fun, is writing a children’s book on the Civil Rights Movement. They want children to write the information on each topic. They feel if children write the information their fellow peers might be able to understand it a little better. The publishing company is asking children from all over the United States to submit an informative piece of writing on one of the following topics: School Segregation, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, and the Gains and Losses of the Civil Rights Movement. The publishing company is looking for students who can write accurate information, write to inform, and submit an illustration for their piece of writing. Today, after each team of students has become experts on their assigned topic they will work together on completing an informative paragraph and an illustration. Each team's informative paragraph and illustration will be presented to the president of the publishing company. The president will select one informative paragraph accompanied by its illustration from each of the topics listed above. These will be published in their new children’s book on the Civil Rights Movement. Remember that each team's informative paragraph should be accurate, neat, grammatically correct, and well-organized. The illustration should reflect the information written in the informative paragraph and should be neat, have clean lines, and be colorful."
