Within this Project:
- Students choose a youth initiated civil rights movement from the past or current day.
- Students will research and answer questions about key leaders, events, and opposition to the movement they choose.
- Students choose an instrumental version of one of the raps within Hamilton: The Musical (Students can modify actual Hamilton lyrics, or make their own)
- Students vote on the best rap and, if you so choose, give those students a larger forum in a rap contest assembly by the end of the week.
This is a 4 Day Project, though easily could be 5 if you want to give them more time. My suggestion is to make this a cross-curricular project with LA where they are given more time to research and write lyrics for one day within their LA classes.
(There have been suggestions to include an LA portion on rap, poetic devices, etc. My suggestion, check out this link: http://graphics.wsj.com/hamilton/ and you can make a pretty cool lesson. If I get enough requests to make this LA lesson based on that article, I'll do it.)
Can be used within the "Unit 6 Plan: The Amendments" after you cover Civil Rights Amendments and Movements.
*You don't need to be a Hamilton: The Musical fan to pull off this project.
