Bundle Description

This product is a set of four paired passages for a total of eight social studies reading comprehension passages covering the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement.

The passages cover concepts such as abolitionists including Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Frederick Douglass, the Union Army, the Confederate Army, the Freedmen’s Bureau, sharecropping, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, Jim Crow laws, Brown v. Board of Education, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington, and the Civil Rights Act.

Each set includes 10 multiple choice reading comprehension questions, a compare and contrast written response organizer, main idea task, and writing prompts for narrative, informational, and persuasive writing. Sets then include a variety of additional reading strategy activities. Pick and choose what close reading activities your students need the most. You could use them all and allow the passages to serve as close reading material for a week. All passage sets include a suggested pacing guide. Each paired passage set varies slightly in reading genres and activities. These can be used for 4th or 5th grade students.
