Civil Rights - Photo Analysis Centers Activity
This 17 page/slide resource is a photo analysis that uses a "centers" activity format with five different photos/centers related to the Civil Rights Movement. This excellent resource includes five different and powerful photos that can be used in the five different centers for use in the classroom.
The students rotate through each of the five centers in order to view a different image and use an included photo analysis chart in order to record their observations and interpretations of each image. The included photo analysis chart requires students to consider the 5W's (Who, What Where When and Why) of each photo and then to offer an overall interpretation. This is a great activity for building and improving student photo analysis skills and collaboration skills as they rotate and work with other students.

This 27 page/slide package includes 3 unique resources related to the Jim Crow Laws and the impact it had on the lives of people.
The first resource is a 20 slide PowerPoint that details the history, significance and major elements of the Jim Crow Laws era in American History and how it led to the Civil Rights Movement. The PowerPoint details how the Jim Crow Laws impacted African Americans and the effect it had on American society. The PowerPoint includes vivid images related to the Jim Crow system and will engage your students with dynamic animations and transitions of the slides.
The second resource is a 5 page student handout in which students will record notes related to the included Jim Crow Laws PowerPoint. It is an excellent resource for maintaining student participation and allowing students the opportunity to record notes!
Civil Rights - Jim Crow Laws - Photo Essay with Rubric and Teacher Guide
This 4 page resource involves students creating a photo essay based on how the Jim Crow Laws impacted the lives of people in the time period. The resource includes a student handout that details the expectations of the photo essay and the process by which students should create their photo essay. It involves students first identifying the ways that the events of the Jim Crow Laws impacts the lives of people who lived in the time period through a collaborative place-mat activity. Once students have identified the impacts related to the Jim Crow Laws, they then create their photo essays using a series of images and captions to convey their interpretations.
Civil Rights - Rosa Parks (Reading, Primary Sources, Project, Assignments)
This 14 page Civil Rights package includes 4 resources related to the life and legacy of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The entire package includes all necessary teacher keys, guides, and rubrics for ease of use!
The package begins with a one-page reading on the Rosa Parks bus incident in 1955 and the impact it would have on the overall life of African-Americans. Next, the resource includes two pages of primary sources related to the arrest of Rosa Parks (original police report). Students will use the reading and primary sources to answer a set of analysis questions that center on factual information of the Rosa Parks protest.
Next, this resource includes a research project wherein students will research a different example of protest or activism and compare it with Rosa Parks and her protest on the bus in 1955. The project requires students to complete research but allows freedom for students to pursue a topic that interests them as well as the freedom to complete the project in a manner of their choosing. A great student-centered activity in which students can build on their understanding of the Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks and the importance of protest and activism. Comes with a marking rubric for ease of assessment.

This 4 page resource contains a project that requires students to analyze the song Blowin' in the Wind by Bob Dylan and the ways in which it relates to the fight for rights at the time. The famous song became an anthem of the era and is an excellent tool for student analysis in order to show their interpretive skills and their ability to relate a source to the events of the movement. This resource includes a student handout that details the expectations and events to be displayed in the timeline assignment.
