This activity includes six Civil Rights songs written and performed by Nina Simone between the years of 1965-1968. Put the students into small groups or you can have them analyze the song individually first and then break them into groups for discussion. The worksheet provided will give the students structure in doing the activity. They will focus on audience, point of view, what a historian would take from the song and is the song still relevant to current society in the US.
Once the students have had one class period to analyze the song and discuss it in groups, the next class period would be devoted to listening to all six songs and having each group talk about their analysis of the song. (This actually might take three class periods depending on the length of your periods.)
This activity could also be used during Black History Month.
