Students review the Civil Rights Movement by completing a timeline activity and answering 4 questions (this covers the years 1946-1968). There are 23 items for students to place on the timeline. Students must classify each item according to a system detailed in the instructions, they have one task to complete for 6 items of their choice, and another task to complete for 4 other items of their choice. All instructions are provided in the handout. There are arrows in the first two lines of the timeline showing students the direction to fill out the pieces in. This could work for a sub! Answers are provided where appropriate.
Sample timeline items and questions include:
--Selma to Montgomery march
--Brown v Board of Education
--Black Panther Party founded
--Thurgood Marshall becomes first black American on Supreme Court
--Does the Civil Rights movement compare to any other period/movement/fight in US history? Why and how, or why not?
--Would you have supported the methods and thinking of Martin Luther King, Jr. or Malcolm X, and why?
***a teacher's note is included in the file describing an alternate way students can complete this activity***
