This engaging group project has students act as major protest groups from the Civil Rights Era, culminating in an immersive in class experience called Woodstock. Let students learn about protest groups, their purpose, and their strategies in a fun, role-playing project that fosters creativity and learning. Have students research, create, and role-play major groups in the protest era and host an event your students won't forget!

Students will work in groups and represent: Students for a Democratic Society, Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, Congress on Racial Equality, Weather Underground, Women Strike for Peace, Black Panthers, Brown Berets, & United Farm Workers

Students will create:

  • An introduction for their group (requires research + knowledge of the group)
  • Visual propaganda for their group
  • In-class performance (protest simulation, spoken word, song, video, etc.)
  • BONUS: Students are asked to dress like the time period and/or members of the protest group. My students LOVED this element!

This activity includes:

  • Teacher directions
  • Student directions
  • Protest group trivia (and KEY)
  • Exit Ticket
  • Slides/pages to display during in-class work time and the Woodstock event
  • Rubric

My American History students look forward to Woodstock every year. They have the opportunity to learn about a variety of protest groups, their strategies, their successes, and their limits. This interactive activity ensures students will remember major elements of the anti-war movement, Civil Rights Movement, and labor movement.
