This differentiated choice board offers student nine activities to choose from that center around the causes of the Civil War. The activities are titled as follows: Dred Scott Decision; Election of 1860; Uncle Tom's Cabin; Southern Secession; Harpers Ferry; Fugitive Slave Law; Compromise of 1850; Kansas-Nebraska Act; Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Activity choices include designing a magazine cover, creating a political cartoon, and developing sketchnotes.
The Civil War Causes Tic Tac Toe comes complete with hyperlinked videos, articles, and primary sources and outlines clear expectations for your students in the directions.
I generally instruct students to choose three activities in a row, like the game Tic Tac Toe. I also offer students the choice of completing a fourth square for extra credit. Although I assign this as a take-home assignment, students could easily be given 2-3 full days (depending on in-class time offered) to complete this in class. I usually allow students 1-2 weeks to complete this assignment, handing it out at the beginning of the unit and making it due at the end as a summative assessment.
