Comparing Historical Events-Students complete a chart comparing the Revolutionary War to the Civil War by comparing and contrasting. (VS. 1c)
Connecting Past to Present-Students complete a chart that compares the Civil War era with modern day. After viewing an example, students read three events from the Civil War and think of a modern day connection. Then they think of their own event from the war and its modern day connection (VS. 1e)
Sequencing Civil War Events-Students research 14 events from the Civil War individually or in pairs to find out when they happened. After filling in the dates in each box, they cut apart the cards, and glue them onto a piece of paper in order to make a timeline.. (VS. 1f)
Interpreting Historical Perspectives-Students read four quotes and interpret the quotes by answering the question provided. Then, students pretend they are a Virginian slave during the war and make-up an appropriate quote (VS. 1g)
Let’s Think: Questions about the Civil War-Students answer four questions about the Civil War that require them to think, draw conclusions, generalize, and support their answers. Includes a map interpreting question. Includes answer key. (VS. 1d, VS. 1i)
Lincoln’s Election and the Civil War-This two page document has students interpret, compare and analyze two different maps. One map shows election results from the 1860 Presidential election and the other is a map from 1918 showing the 1861 division of states during the Civil War. Includes answer key. Suggested Places to Visit In and Near Virginia-A list of over 15 places in and near Virginia to visit that relate to the Civil War, including battlefields, museums, and historic sites.
