This worksheet allows students learn about the difficulties Lincoln faced in the Election of 1864. I use this worksheet to give students a stronger understanding of how unpopular the Civil War and Lincoln were heading into the 1864 Election. My students have a better understanding of the importance of the 1864 Election and the political and military savvy of Abraham Lincoln to win reelection.
This activity is very easy to use. All you have to do is print off the reading from the following website for classroom use or direct students to the website to answer the worksheet questions:
The worksheet is labeled (“The Tide is Setting Strongly Against Us”)
Students read the document and answer the questions on the worksheet. The worksheet includes ten questions and has an answer sheet for the teacher. The Showdown at Sumter Worksheet can be used to generate classroom discussion or be used as homework. Feel free to modify this assignment as needed for your classes.
