Civil War Escape Room: Convince Robert E Lee to Surrender at Appomattox to end the Civil War!

In this 100% fun and engaging escape room breakout activity, students are introduced to the Vigenère Cipher that was developed in the 16th century and later popularized by the Confederate States of America as a way to relay messages behind Union lines.

Students are placed in the shoes of Union troops after the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse as they await Robert E Lee's surrender of his Army of Northern Virginia. However, Lee will not surrender to just anybody; he needs the Union army to demonstrate their worthiness in order to earn his surrender. To convince Lee to surrender his army and bring the Civil War to an end, student teams must crack the Confederate cipher and solve five total clues! Do you have what it takes to bring the last four years of civil war to an end?

Students use the Vigenère Cipher to translate four secret clues, conduct research or use background knowledge, and solve the final clue by piecing together the information they have learned. A 60-minute timer is also included to display as student teams try to break the code!

Guaranteed to excite and engage your classroom!
Leave your students asking for more (like mine do)!

Don't have a box or a lock? No worries -- simple workaround ideas are included that keep students focused!
