Part 1) Students complete this 4 Corner Debate chart by examining quotes about the causes and outcomes of the Civil War. Students support their stance with specific evidence from previous learning or class materials. Topics covered include Uncle Tom's Cabin, the Cotton Gin, Harriet Tubman, Slavery, and the Emancipation Proclamation.
Part 2) This lesson is most effective at the end of direct instruction/various activities on the Civil War. This works well as a summative assessment experience like a Socratic Seminar. The 4 Corner Debate strategy can also be used where students walk and stand in the corner that corresponds with their completed chart, "Strongly Agree, Strongly Disagree, Agree and Disagree". Students share their findings and engage in debate and then can have the opportunity to move to an opposing corner if they were persuaded.
