This Civil War Journal project gives students a glimpse of what life was like during the civil war though the eyes of those who were there. It includes excerpts from diaries/journals of a union soldier, confederate soldier, and a battlefield nurse. They must choose a persona of a union soldier, a child who is living in a home near a battlefield, a confederate soldier, a parent who has a child fighting in the war, or a battlefield nurse. Giving examples, prompts and questions to quide their writing, students are taught to write a journal entry as the civil war persona of their choice. It also includes a website reference for further examples and research.
