Students will write a Civil War letter.
After reading 4 sample letters, which are included, students will compose a letter as if they are someone at home writing to someone at the front, or someone at the front writing to someone at home.
This assignment might yield the best results if it is done in conjunction with the Social Studies/American History teacher so as to provide a more realistic tone to the student letter.
As well, there is a page provided for the final letter.
As many who wrote letters during the Civil War would ask readers to forgive any mistakes made, this might present to the hesitant writer a vehicle to write for writing's sake, as there is no mention in the directions for proper spelling or grammar. (Of course, this is just a suggestion.)
