This activity is designed to provide a bridge between the Civil War and Reconstruction. In Virginia, students study the Civil War in 6th grade and Reconstruction in 7th. As a result, students returning after a lengthy summer break (or those new to the state) do not have the background information required to understand the conditions in the USA after the war that lead to Reconstruction.
Additionally, students will continue to improve their map and data analysis skills. First, students plot the locations of each battle on the map and trace the Union Army’s progress on the Western front and note the close locations on the Eastern front. Questions based on the map and data table start as simple interpretation and lead students to more higher-level analysis.
