This is a collection of five poems written either during or after the Civil War. I used these poems when my students were reading the novel "Across Five Aprils" in ELA and studying the Civil War in U.S. History class. Each poem is formatted as its own MSWord document. This was an excellent way to make the emotions of those involved in this devastating war come to life for my students.
The poems include:
"A MESSAGE" by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward (1844-1911)
"BROTHER JONATHAN'S LAMENT FOR SISTER CAROLINE" by Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)
"COME UP FROM THE FIELDS, FATHER" by Walt Whitman
"LITTLE GIFFEN" by Francis Orray Ticknor (1822 - 1874)
"THE BLUE AND THE GRAY" by Francis Miles Finch (1827-1907)
