The Battle of Antietam during the Civil War was the single bloodiest day in U.S. military history. This PowerPoint examines how Robert E. Lee’s and Stonewall Jackson’s Special Orders 191 were lost by the Confederate Army and found by the Union Army at Monocacy Battlefield and how that impacted both armies, causing them to meet at Antietam. The author uses original photographs and rich, detailed text on 35 slides to tell the story of the day’s battle at Antietam from the Dunker Church through the Bloody Cornfield and Sunken Road to the Burnside Bridge. Also, the author includes some personal stories of actual people who were at Antietam on that fateful day. Of special note is the story of Clara Barton, the Angel of the Battlefield and the founder of the American Red Cross, as well as a visit to her nearby home which later became the first headquarters for the American Red Cross. This presentation can be adapted to a variety of age levels.
