Richard Kirkland, aka “the Angel of Marye’s Heights,” was a nineteen year old South Carolina soldier who helped demolish the Union assaults on Marye’s Heights. The day after the attack he could not bear to hear the cry’s of wounded and dying union soldiers strewn across the landscape in front of the wall. He asked his commander, General Kershaw, if he could help comfort them. The general believed he would likely be killed by enemy snipers but granted the request. General Kershaw’s 1880 accounting of the incident, in a South Carolina newspaper is below.
