What would Abraham Lincoln send to his Instagram followers? What General Lee or Grant post? This is a simple, fun and engaging way to get students to interact with most popular social marketing sites on the web and learn historical content without needing computers.
Common Core writing aligned. In this assignment students will create a picture and "post comments" based on what they have learned about a historical figure from the Civil War. Students write who would have "liked" the photo and his/her relationship to the figure. Lastly, students "post" #hashtag character traits for the figure that they are required to support with quoted evidence from the text OR by what they have learned in class (the assignment has 2 template options based on teacher needs/resources).
In an effort to make this assignment as versatile as possible, I made the template general. However, here are a few ideas for Civil War instruction:
President Lincoln Selfie
Sectional Leader (Calhoun, Webster, Clay) Selfie
General Lee or Grant Selfie
Plantation owner or Factory owner Selfie
Factory Worker or Slave Selfie
Perhaps even two Selfies followed up by a Venn Diagram comparison chart for North VS South for all of the above mentioned.
My students really liked this idea. They were completely engaged in class. Have a great lesson!
