This is a brief, one page reading the helps explain the the idea behind total war. It discusses how total war was used to insight fear to the Confederate States so that they might want to end the Civil War. Ulysses S. Grant was a strong believer of the concept as a plan to defeat an enemy. Students will read about how William Tecumseh Sherman used total war on his "March to the Sea". After the reading, students answer 9 questions about what they just read.

This can be used as classwork, homework, or a supplement used for a substitute.

An answer key is included.
