This is a simple and easy to use lesson plan. Have your students watch a great 18 minute video on the Overland Campaign and answer the questions. The video is from a series by the Civil War Trust Organization.
The video can also be found on YouTube at:
This video focuses on the major battles of the 1864 campaign in Virginia as General Grant tries to defeat Robert E. Lee and capture Richmond, Virginia. The following battles are covered in this video worksheet:
Beginning of the siege at Petersburg
Students will find the video interesting and engaging. From my perspective this is the best and most student friendly documentary about the Overland Campaign. I suggest pausing the video every five minutes to go over answers with the class and to discuss key points of the campaign. The worksheet has 20 questions and a teacher answer sheet is included. With discussion and answering of questions in class this video worksheet will take about a half hour to complete. This short video goes great with any lecture on the Overland Campaign or the final two years of the Civil War.
